These Terms & Conditions ("Terms") govern your use of the Lumae mobile and desktop application ("Lumae," "the App"), provided by Gess Technologies Ltd ("we," "us," "our," "Gess Technologies"), a company registered in England and Wales (Company Number: 17350731). By downloading, installing, or using Lumae, you agree to these Terms. If you don't agree, please don't use the App.
Lumae is a personal book-tracking application that lets you catalogue your reading library, track reading progress and sessions, save quotes, and (with a Pro subscription) sync your library across your own devices via iCloud, use Home Screen widgets and a Reading Timer Live Activity, use the Apple Watch app, unlock additional colour themes and app icons, receive automated backups to your own iCloud Drive, and view expanded reading statistics (Reading Trends, Reading Wrapped) and Spin the Wheel.
Subject to your compliance with these Terms and Apple's own Standard End User License Agreement (which applies unless superseded here), we grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to download and use Lumae on Apple devices you own or control, for your own personal, non-commercial use.
Lumae offers two subscription tiers, both billed and managed entirely through the Apple App Store:
Free trial. Every download of Lumae includes a 14-day free trial with full access to all Pro features. No payment details are required to begin it, and it does not convert into a paid subscription automatically — nothing is charged unless you choose to buy. When the 14 days end, Lumae requires either a Core or Pro subscription in order to continue; until one is made, the app's features are unavailable. Your library remains on your device throughout, and you can export a complete backup of it at any time, including after the trial has ended. The trial is counted from the date your Apple ID first obtained Lumae, and deleting and reinstalling the app does not restart it.
Billing and renewal. Both tiers automatically renew for successive one-year periods unless auto-renewal is turned off at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. Your Apple ID account will be charged for renewal within 24 hours prior to the end of the current period, at the price you agreed to at purchase (see Price changes below).
Managing or cancelling. You can manage or cancel your subscription at any time in your device's App Store account settings — Gess Technologies Ltd cannot cancel it on your behalf, since we have no access to your Apple ID or payment details.
Price changes. We may change the price of either subscription from time to time. Where we do, we will not charge you the new price on renewal unless you have been given advance notice of it and have accepted it; if you do not accept, your subscription will not renew at the new price. Apple's App Store rules require this notice-and-acceptance process today, and we undertake to follow it whether or not those rules change.
Refunds. All purchases and subscriptions are billed by Apple, and refund requests are handled entirely by Apple under its own refund policies — Gess Technologies Ltd cannot issue refunds directly.
Changing tier. Core and Pro are two levels of a single subscription group, so you hold one subscription at a time rather than both. Moving from Core to Pro takes effect immediately, and Apple credits the unused portion of your current period against the new price. Moving from Pro down to Core takes effect at your next renewal date.
The books, quotes, notes, and other information you add to Lumae ("Your Content") remains yours. You're solely responsible for Your Content, including making sure you have the right to store any quotes or excerpts you save (for example, respecting the copyright of the books you're quoting from for personal reference).
You agree not to:
Lumae uses third-party services to look up book information (Google Books API, Open Library, and Apple's Books/iTunes Search API). Book data, cover images, and metadata returned by these services belong to their respective providers/publishers, and their accuracy is not guaranteed by Gess Technologies Ltd. See our Privacy Policy for more detail on what's sent to these services.
The Lumae name, logo, and app design are the property of Gess Technologies Ltd. These Terms don't grant you any rights to our trademarks or branding beyond what's needed to use the App as intended.
Lumae is provided "as is" and "as available," without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, to the fullest extent permitted by law. We don't guarantee that the App will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that book data retrieved from third-party services will always be accurate or available.
To the fullest extent permitted by law, Gess Technologies Ltd will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or any loss of data, arising from your use of, or inability to use, Lumae. Nothing in these Terms limits any liability that cannot legally be limited, including liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or fraud.
While Lumae provides manual export/restore and, for Pro subscribers, automated iCloud Drive backups and iCloud sync, you're responsible for maintaining your own backups of anything irreplaceable. Gess Technologies Ltd is not liable for any loss of data.
You may stop using Lumae at any time by deleting the App from your device. We may suspend or restrict access to features (excluding purchases already made, per Apple's own policies) if we reasonably believe you've breached these Terms.
We may update these Terms from time to time. Continued use of Lumae after an update constitutes acceptance of the revised Terms. Material changes will be reflected by updating the "Last updated" date above.
These Terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales, without regard to conflict-of-law principles. Any dispute arising from these Terms or your use of Lumae will be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales.
